Objectives

TAXINOMISIS has 6 main objectives:

  • Investigation of the causal relationship of the major pathways and factors identified in symptomatic carotid artery disease

  • Networks, pathways and factors identified in the various cohorts’ studies (available to TAXINOMISIS Consortium) will be explored to study disease phenotypes and disintegrate them into endotypes according to specific pathobiological mechanisms
  • The risk stratification tool will be developed through the integration of a computational model of plaque progression, and an agent based model of plaque progression, that encompasses also machine learning and data mining techniques
  • A test for determining the presence of single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and predicting drug response according to the individual’s own genotype, and supporting personalized (precision) medical treatment
  • The new risk model of carotid artery disease stratification will be evaluated in an observational multicentre clinical study involving 270 asymptomatic and 30 symptomatic patients from 6 major clinical centres of vascular surgery
  • A thorough cost-effectiveness analysis will be performed to compare the costs and outcomes of the application of  the new risk stratification model, and the lab-on-chip device for pharmacogenetics, with the current clinical practice and recommendations
